University of California Cooperative Extension
Santa Rosa, California
Provide the essential management and direction needed to organize, implement and communicate results of the Russian River Coho Salmon Captive Broodstock Program on tributary streams of the Russian River. Provide field data as feedback for the adaptive management of a captive broodstock and endangered coho salmon recovery program in the Russian River Watershed. Work cooperatively with representatives from the California Department of Fish and Game, NOAA Fisheries, Army Corps of Engineers, Sonoma County Water Agency, and other organizations through the recovery program's Monitoring and Evaluation committee to integrate and coordinate monitoring program activities with recovery program efforts.
- Organize and facilitate operation of upstream and downstream migrant traps and spawner/redd surveys including supervision, training, scheduling and assisting three two-person field survey teams.
- Coordinate data collection of oversummer growth and survival and habitat characteristics, including leading snorkeling, electrofishing, and habitat typing crews, and the installation and maintenance of stream temperature and flow gauges.
- Coordinate field data collection tasks between partnering agencies, organizations, and volunteers.
- Manage databases of collected field data and generate estimates of fish abundance, survival and growth during multiple life stages.
- Generate and submit required reports.
- Provide reports to and receive input from the Russian River Coho Salmon Captive Broodstock Program's Monitoring and Evaluation Committee.

- Conducting work on improving the system and timing for collecting pre-treatment data by improving the notification process to contract manager/grantees and reducing flexibility and complication in the selection process.
- Overseeing implementation monitoring of FRGP projects, and provide training and QA/QC of data forms and data entry.
- Managing the completion of implementation monitoring evaluations with an established training system and QA/QC procedure to help contract managers become more independent, competent and punctual at implementation monitoring.
- Developing training materials, i.e. power point presentation, examples of completed forms, poster presentations.
- Field testing qualitative protocol, collaborating on protocol assessment and revision, providing relevant database development feedback.
- Reviewing and evaluating current protocols and assessing their suitability and application to FRGP projects based on field testing and recommendations.
- Assisting with data analysis of completed evaluations to facilitate assessment.
- Completing all components (forms, GPS/GIS, photos, etc.) of the effectiveness project evaluations and enter the data into the CHRPD. Agree upon suitable formats for restoration project evaluation reports or case studies.
- Assisting with the compilation of data and preparation of reports to fulfill the reporting requirements of the DFG; US ACOE, Section 404; and the NMFS, ESA, Section 10 permits.
- Assisting with the development of a standardized system to archive restoration project monitoring photographs. Collaborating with DFG and PSMFC staff to develop a database to store photo metadata and attributes, and online retrieval and viewing capabilities for selected project photographs.
